Book Review - The Paper Dolls by Julia Donaldson

April Prendergast

We are very proud to be on the Books & Pieces Parent Panel.  The Paper Dolls by Julia Donaldson is one of the books which they have kindly sent us to review.

This book is about...

The Paper Dolls is about a little girl who makes some paper dolls with her mummy.  Once made, she has lots of lovely adventures with them in her house and in her garden.  Until one day when something very sad happens.  Thankfully happy memories overcome the sadness and the ending of the book will bring a smile to everyone's face.

We like this book because...

We love the rhythm of this story and the repetition is fantastic for helping children remember the characters.  Even after reading it only a couple of times, toddlers and pre-schoolers will probably be able to tell you that there is Ticky and Tacky and Jackie the Backie and Jim with two noses and Jo with the bow.

The illustrations are by Rebecca Cobb and they are lovely.  So beautifully drawn and in a perfect style for the story, something very child-like about them.

Rosie's favourite part is...

Rosie says that her favourite thing about this book is that she can remember it and tell it to us.  She loves pointing to all the paper dolls and telling us who they are.  She is three and can read this book to us from beginning to end, which she can't do with any of her other books.  There is definitely something about this book that helps little ones to absorb it.  Whether it be the rhythm, repetition or something else......... there is something!
