What is Bookstart?
Bookstart is run by reading charity BookTrust and provides free resources to every local authority in England and Wales. These resources are then delivered in person to families by health, library and early years professionals and practitioners.
Bookstart also gifts free books to all children at two key ages before school to help families read together every day and inspire children with a rewarding love of books. To date, Bookstart has given away more than 34 million free books, helping young children and families develop a love of shared reading.
National Bookstart Week 2017
This week has been National Bookstart Week and there have been lots of fantastic events all across the country. It has been extra special this year as BookTrust celebrated 25 years of helping families enjoy reading together through the Bookstart Programme.
The theme for this year has been Let’s Explore Outdoors! and the book which was chosen to help celebrate this was the wonderful Everybunny Dance! by Ellie Sandall. It is a lovely story about friendship between a warren of musical bunnies and a friendly fox.
At each Bookstart Week event, children were given a free copy of Everybunny Dance! BookTrust have given away more than 450,000 copies which is truly amazing - we hope you managed to get your hands on one of them.
TV presenter and radio DJ Lauren Laverne has also recorded an online interactive version of Everybunny Dance! which can be found here.
Listening to her read the story is guaranteed to bring a smile to your face. There is a version with sign language too!
Eloise really enjoyed listening to Lauren read the story!
We have been lucky enough to attend some of the events this week and have had such a brilliant time.
On Monday Rosie and Eloise went along to storytime at Ramsbottom library. They listened to Sarah reading the wonderful book "Everybunny Dance" by Ellie Sandall and were very excited that they got a copy of their own to take home. The storytelling session was very interactive too as the children joined in by playing musical instruments, dancing, singing and clapping. Making their very own bunny ears after they had listened to the story was the icing on the cake! It was lovely to see them all having so much fun in the library.
On Thursday Eloise went to Manchester Central library where lots of children had a super time with author and illustrator Nick Sharratt. Nick drew some fabulous illustrations from his books and read some stories including "Mrs Pirate", "Shark in the Park" and "Never use a knife and fork". ( I say read....acted out really!) It was a wonderfully interactive session which the chidren loved, Nick even balanced some bagels on top of a little boy's head.
William and Ted, together with some of their friends, also attended a Bookstart Event at Summertown Library, Oxford. They had a brilliant time listening to Everybunny Dance, making bunny ears and enjoying other books in the library.
